This packaging, associated with the products, fulfils multiple functions that are essential to the product itself, as well as to consumers and professionals: protection, preservation, hygiene, information, traceability, presentation, grouping, transport, storage, etc.

The number of packages is changing in line with factors such as population growth, an increase in the number of households, and changes in consumption patterns, distribution channels, and the needs and expectations of French consumers.

It is therefore necessary to optimise packaging through prevention in order to reduce waste, and innovation is key to defining the right packaging.

Eco-design, beyond prevention through reduction at source, aims to design products that respect the pillars of sustainable development throughout the entire life cycle of the product-packaging combination (from the extraction of materials to their recovery at the end of their life).

b) Objectives

The French National Packaging Council (CNE) wishes to recognise and promote innovative ideas that are relevant to consumers, beneficial to the common good and exemplary in terms of waste prevention and reduction at source.
