Martell challenges spirits packaging design with flat-glass cognac bottle prototype

Cognac purveyor Martell (Pernod Ricard) has unveiled a lightweight bottle prototype made of flat glass. The luxury brand worked with materials science company Vitalink Technology Co on the initiative, inspired by the idea of “glass origami”.

Martell is looking to shake up luxury spirits packaging design with its prototype bottle made of flat glass, a material that is notably used for smartphones and is known for its strength, transparency, and ability to be cut into different shapes. The cognac house teamed up with Asia-based materials science company Vitalink Technology Co for the initiative, exploring how flat glass—manufactured in flat form and produced in large sheets—could be used for sprits packaging.

The two parties were inspired by the art of orgami to fold ultra-thin glass into bottles, with laser-welding used for the seams. Specific laser bonding technology enables “sharp, straight, and exact angles, previously unattainable in glass bottle manufacturing”, explains Martell.
