GUNK launches a brake cleaner for a changing market
As the EPA prepares to phase out perchloroethylene in consumer products, GUNK has introduced a low-VOC, acetone-free aerosol brake cleaner that combines strong cleaning performance with compatibility for modern brake components and compliance in 49 US states.
The B’laster Holdings-owned brand has launched GUNK Acetone-Free Brake Parts Cleaner in 14 oz and 19 oz aerosol formats, targeting the growing need for alternatives to chlorinated brake cleaners. The product uses a proprietary solvent technology and a Turbo Spray actuator to deliver a stronger, more focused stream, helping remove brake dust, grease, oil and brake fluid from pads, rotors, calipers and CV joint assemblies without dismantling the system.
The formula is designed to evaporate quickly without leaving residue and is claimed to be safe on most plastics, rubber, seals, painted surfaces and ABS sensors commonly found in modern brake systems. According to internal laboratory tests conducted in June 2026, the cleaner outperformed the leading non-chlorinated competitor by 70%. With the EPA set to prohibit retail sales of chlorinated brake cleaners for consumer use from March 2027, GUNK says the launch completes a portfolio offering compliant options across all 50 states.
