The symbol system making beauty products accessible to blind consumers

VictoriaLand Beauty’s CyR.U.S. System provides a tactile solution for making beauty packaging and products accessible to blind and partially sighted consumers.

Consumers can navigate VictoriaLand’s portfolio with raised symbols and embossed QR codes that contain touch and audio information about the product type, usage, and ingredients.

The symbols are intuitive so they can be learned by anyone instantaneously. As an example, night cream is symbolised by a crescent moon, while exfoliator is represented by a circle with lines and dots inside. Although symbols are similar, there are still distinct variations, such as the teardrop symbol for face oils and the two teardrops symbol for serums.

According to the founder of VictoriaLand Beauty Victoria Watts, “each QR code is embossed to allow for easy identification to scan using a smartphone.” This gives auditory descriptions of the product and instructions for use. Essentially, this allows blind and partially sighted consumers to pick products based on their ingredients, an important factor for a more personal experience of beauty and cosmetics.
