PCD Innovation Awards Spotlight | Sublimage Extrait De Nuit

In December 2023, our prestigious jury of brands including Chanel, Dior, Interparfums and many others gathered to judge the PCD Innovation Awards. The finalists and winners were announced, recognised and applauded at Paris Packaging Week 2024.

Skincare – Premium

Please describe the brief for the pack. What were the objectives for the innovation project? What were the requirements and constraints?

The brief was to create the first refillable packaging for a serum in Chanel’s most premium skincare franchise: Sublimage l’Extrait.

The objective was to design sustainable packaging using the finest materials (glass, metal, paper) and predominantly recyclable, while dedicating the use of plastic for technical components only.

The product’s usage, including the refilling process, had to meet the most demanding criteria in terms of ergonomics and elegance.

How did the pack fulfil the brief? Please describe the technical innovations in the pack and the challenges they address

The bottle was made of pressed glass in proportions never before achieved by our supplier, ensuring the precise assembly of the refill.

It contains 15% recycled glass.
The refill is made of stretched glass with an aluminum collar designed to minimize its weight.

Drop resistance was made possible through the development of a patented attachment system and a transparent shock absorber, ensuring the flexible and protective retention of the refill in the bottle.

Technical components, such as collars, as well as the square cap and the refill cap, are made from 100% recyclable aluminum.

Why do you believe this pack deserves to win an Innovation Award?

For the first time, Chanel introduces a refillable packaging for a serum, while elevating the perceived quality through the uncompromising choice of noble materials.

Given the level of aesthetic excellence sought, using glass refill in a glass bottle presents a considerable technical challenge, both in terms of producing the components and ensuring a secure retention of the refill.

Each hidden technical function represents an accomplishment and a challenge brilliantly met by our partners in this project.
