In December 2023, our prestigious jury from brands including KAO, Beiersdorf, Unilever and many more came together to judge the ADF Innovation Awards. The finalists and winners were announced, recognised and applauded at Paris Packaging Week 2024.

Please describe the brief for the pack. What were the objectives for the innovation project? What were the requirements and constraints?
Minimalist is a totally new dispenser for aerosol cans. A new packaging and packaging waste regulation (PPWR) is currently being discussed. One part of it will be the recyclability of the packaging.
To be best in class – the whole packaging has to have a high recyclability. So far the dispenser is the part of an aerosol can that makes recycling an aerosol can challenging due to various plastic parts.
Minimalist solves this problem as it is made nearly of mono material – aluminium – and making an aerosol can with this dispenser is easy to recycle. This dispenser can be used on every aerosol can.
How did the pack fulfil the brief? Please describe the technical innovations in the pack and the challenges they address
In general the dispenser is similar to a standard plastic dispenser. However, a lot of design thinking has been put into Minimalist to offer potential customers not only a recyclable dispenser – but also one that can be individually designed to enhance shelf and brand appearance.
The Minimalist concept is patent pending. It will be the very first dispenser where mostly one material was used – and it was purely designed for recyclability.
How did you measure the sustainability impact of the pack and what were the results?
With the new PPWR – the packaging will be assessed on the recyclability of the packaging. A certain percentage of the packaging has to be recyclable.
With this aluminium dispenser an aerosol can will be best in class in terms of recyclability – considerably better compared to a standard aerosol can.
Currently the recyclability of an aerosol can is approximately 85 – 87%. Minimalist will enhance the recyclability of an aerosol can to over 95%.

Minimalist is the first dispenser that is designed with sustainbility in mind and it enhances every aerosol can in the recyclability and design.
