APEAL commends the official approval of improved recyclability measures in the PPWR

APEAL, the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging, has embraced the stricter recyclability measures, which were formally adopted through the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) by the European Parliament (EP).

The ultimate set of measures is designed to decrease the volume of packaging waste produced in the EU and encourage increased rates of recycling.

In this regard, APEAL specifically applauds the implementation of design criteria for recycling, which will be applicable to all types of packaging, and the introduction of recyclability performance grades for packaging categories by 2030.

The establishment of three defined recyclability grades – A, B, C (95, 80%, 70%) to be met by 2030, and two – A, B (95%, 80%) by 2038, is set to stimulate innovation. Steel packaging, graded A or B across all formats, showcases superior performance in comparison to rival materials like plastics and laminated cartons.
