Chanel Fragrance & Beauty partners with Hydro for low-carbon aluminum beauty packaging
Norwegian aluminum and energy company Hydro has partnered with Chanel Parfums et Beauté to develop low-carbon aluminum for cosmetics packaging across skincare, make-up, and fragrance. Enhanced traceability and the use of recycled aluminum will also be areas of focus through the tie-up’s 2026-2030 roadmap.
Growing global demand for aluminum is positioning the cosmetics sector as “a powerful driver of innovation in responsible sourcing,” says Norway’s Hydro, an aluminum producer that has signed a strategic agreement with Chanel Fragrance & Beauty. While the luxury beauty industry accounts for a small share of global aluminum volumes, it is said to set high standards for quality, design, and traceability, Hydro highlights.
Low-carbon aluminum for beauty packaging
Hydro will work with Chanel on a joint roadmap through 2030 to produce low-carbon aluminum for make-up, fragrance, and skincare packaging.
The supplier’s low-carbon aluminum is produced in Norway using renewable energy and has a certified carbon footprint of no more than 4.0 kilograms of CO2 per kilogram of aluminum—less than one third of the global average, affirms Hydro. The work will initially center on Hydro Reduxa primary aluminum sheet ingot, which will be rolled into aluminum sheets for packaging.
Hydro and Chanel Fragrance & Beauty will endeavor to further reduce the carbon footprint, including exploring aluminum produced in specific batches. The carbon footprint of the packaging solutions are projected to approach 3.0 kilograms of CO2 per kilogram of aluminum by 2030, according to Hydro.
