What does smart packaging mean for brands today?

Smart packaging is reshaping how brands engage with consumers, manage logistics and deliver value. As the boundaries between digital and physical continue to blur, packaging is performing additional functions beyond protection and containment.

Smart (or interactive) packaging merges physical materials with digital technology, transforming standard packaging into a powerful communication and data tool. By printing QR codes, embedding RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) or NFC (Near Field Communication) chips, packaging gains the ability to inform, automate and interact at various stages of the supply chain.

The addition of a QR code allows the brand to pack more information into a scanable code. This could be to access batch information, a web address, instruction manuals, facilitate orders and beyond.

By physically embedding chips into packaging, RFID is already revolutionising retail through automated item scanning and smart checkout systems, removing the need for barcode scanning.

Streamlining the warehouse through the use of RFID labels can lead to greater efficiency on a large scale. Order fulfilment is quicker and human error is reduced.

RFID is an unbelievably quick and easy way for retailers to display and monitor stock, making store replenishment swifter and display compliance simpler.

NFC technology, common in contactless payments, is also finding its place on-pack. A chip is incorporated and typically hidden within the packaging. With just a tap of a smartphone, consumers can unlock product stories, loyalty programmes or traceability data turning passive packaging into an active engagement channel, building brand loyalty.

NFC-enabled tags can detect tampering and authenticate products, helping fight counterfeiting and fraud, a critical advantage in sectors including beauty and luxury goods.

Our range of RFID and NFC chips and antennas are laid on paper substrates rather than plastic and being smaller than a grain of rice, are compatible with recycling processes.

There’s no doubt that smart packaging will pay a huge role in the future of packaging.
