Evolving consumer trends and opportunities in household and personal care packaging

Consumers today are experiencing the environmental impact of their purchase decisions and, as a result, are increasingly seeking household and personal care packaging that is sustainable, safe, and convenient. Ball’s 2022 global consumer survey exposes a gap between the packaging virtues that consumers look for in household and personal care products and what is available to in retail environments. As suppliers and brands we have an opportunity to deliver real, sustainable solutions that meet consumer demand and minimize our impact on the planet.

Smarter aerosol steels for people and planet

Steel is already the easiest packaging material to recycle – and the most recycled. Despite these advantages, ArcelorMittal continues to develop and implement innovative solutions which further reduce the environmental footprint of steel aerosol cans. These include continuous efforts to reduce the weight of aerosol cans, solutions which reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of the steelmaking process, and a chromium-free REACH compliant treatment for the steel’s surface. Together these developments are helping our customers create aerosol can solutions which are better for people – and the planet.

Recycling aerosol products in the United States

There are discussions as to whether aerosol products should be recognized as recyclable at federal, state, and local levels of government within the United States. NGOs and the Waste Industry continue to push back, citing safety concerns around any potential contents within the pressurized container. While empty aerosol containers are currently recognized as “Widely Recyclable” within the U.S., that may shift in the not too distant future. Furthermore, policy debates continue as to how non-empty aerosol products should be properly disposed. Find out the latest regarding disposing aerosol products in the United States, the actions of the U.S. aerosol industry, and what you can do to help.

“Less is more – for the most sustainable aerosol can in the world” TUBEX in cooperation with PURe

Many monoblock aluminium aerosol cans are manufactured with the inclusion of recycled materials. This is where sustainability in can making usually stops. Canmaker TUBEX and ink supplier PURe have a unique collaboration and show that there is more to it. An overvarnish with mostly food-grade ingredients? Printing inks that contain no trace of mineral oil? It’s all possible. Dr Artur Eisele-Kohler from PURe gives an insight into the development of natural inks and the biodegradable overvarnish, and TUBEX Managing Director Leopold Werdich completes the presentation with an insight into TUBEX’s motivation and experience in using PURe inks aiming to produce the most sustainable monobloc aerosol can on earth.
