Design Case Study | Bvlgari Man Terrae Essence

Designed by Bulgari, Man Terrae Essence pays tribute to the power of the Earth, its authentic richness and diverse fertility. A scent translated through a contemporary and original vetiver interpretation, combined with an exclusive smoky Terrae accord. Find out more about this pack that entered our PCD Innovation Awards 2022 on our exclusive design case study below.

Please describe the brief for the pack. What were the objectives for the innovation project? What were the requirements and constraints?

Man Terrae Essence had to be the new natural element of the Man franchise. Following the launches of the Fire (MAN in BLACK), the Wood (MAN Wood Essence) and the air (MAN Glacial Essence), Man Terrae was an interpretation of the Soil. The iconic region for Bulgari was Tuscany, its colours, its vibrations and its architecture. The colours will be applied on the Glass and on the secondary packaging, while the spray cap will talk for architecture. The innovation objective was to countertype the Tuscan travertine marble on the spray cap. The constraints are to improve the environmental performance of the product compared to the previous launch.

How did the pack fulfil the brief? Please describe the technical innovations in the pack and the challenges they address?

The spray cap decorative part was injected using a mix of 100% PCR PP along with 2 immiscible colorants. The injection process control, as well as the colorant density range, were defined to manufacture a random marble effect but avoiding to have pieces without colorant or with a too high density of colorants.

Finally, the bottle contains 40% of PCR glass, making Man Terrae Essence, the line using the highest rate of recycled materials among the Bulgari Man franchise.

What makes this pack special?

According to the designers, “The creative expectations to countertype the travertine marble were high, and the risks to be deceptive for the end consumer were significant. Not only the single step injection process allowed to reach an excellence level of marble interpretation, but we also used 100% PCR plastic material”.
