PLD Innovation Awards Spotlight | Etui Crayères Dom Ruinart

In December 2022, our prestigious jury, made up of brands such as Moët Hennessy, La Martiniquaise, Rémy Cointreau and many others, met to judge the PLD Innovation Awards. The finalists and winners of the PLD Innovation Awards 2023 were announced, recognised and applauded at PLD Paris, part of Paris Packaging Week in January 2023.

Sustainable Innovation Award Winner: Etui Crayères Dom Ruinart

Please describe the brief for the pack. What were the objectives for the innovation project? What were the requirements and constraints?

In 2020, the House of Ruinart unveiled the “second skin” case, moulded to the shape of its bottle. Two years later, the House of Ruinart has designed a new case for the Dom Ruinart cuvée, the “étui crayères”. This time, the case is no longer moulded to the shape of the bottle, but takes the shape of a block of chalk from Ruinart’s historical chalk pits. In order to have this shape, the case is in contact with only a few points of the bottle, while keeping a rigidity in the hand. The texture also had to be perfected in order to allow the consumer to immerse oneself in the House’s cellars.

How did the pack fulfil the brief? Please describe the technical innovations in the pack and the challenges they address

This single material case is made of paper, is recyclable and comes from wood from eco-managed European forests (FSC Mixed certification). The case is made of paper and has been moulded in one piece. The clasp is a major innovation as it does not require the use of magnets, plastic wedges or any other material. The machining of the mould required the creation of special milling cutters, so as to allow the creation of almost 400 facets that make up the structure of the case. It took 16 design iterations to reproduce a block of chalk.

Why do you believe this pack deserves to win an Innovation Award?

With this new secondary packaging, Ruinart continues its approach and offers a recyclable paper envelope, allowing a 62% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to its previous case. The shape of this 400-faceted case was inspired by Ruinart’s historical pencils. By keeping the organic shape of the white chalk, it pays homage to the chalk pits listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With this new case, shape and texture allow the consumer to immerse oneself in the cellars of the House.
