French winemakers fear Trump tariffs will hit sales in crucial US market
French wine and spirits exporters fear heavy losses following Washington’s announcement of a customs duty.
The trade agreement between the EU and the United States, unveiled in August, confirms that wines and spirits will not benefit from tariff exemptions. The basic rate of 15% will apply, a measure deemed worrying by French Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard.
According to Gabriel Picard, president of the exporters’ federation, the combined impact of customs duties and unfavourable exchange rates could reduce the annual turnover of French sales to the United States by €1 billion.
